The Hague, Brisbane, 9 May 2024 —
The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) is launching READ Brisbane, an initiative highlighting books about Brisbane, the host city of the IFLA Information Futures Summit, to be held from 30 September to 3 October 2024.
Many travellers read about places they visit before they go, but library and information professionals are particularly keen to research their destination in advance. Books can also create interest and even fascination, providing as much of a draw as tourist brochures and more.
To help Summit delegates immerse themselves in Brisbane’s history and culture, the Summit’s Programme Committee has provided a list of recommended books set in Brisbane. The selection shines a light on the city, its people, its history, and what makes it special.
Vicki McDonald, State Librarian and CEO of the State Library of Queensland, and IFLA President, has shared her pick Edenglassie by Miles Franklin Literary Award winner Melissa Lucashenko. Edenglassie is an epic novel of two extraordinary Indigenous stories set five generations apart.
In order to build interest IFLA is encouraging colleagues from Brisbane and beyond to choose their favourite, and share a photograph of themselves reading the book on social media.
The Summit itself is a very new type of event for IFLA, offering a space for a collective conversation about the trends and issues that will shape the future of information and knowledge, and how libraries and their values can shape this for the better.
We look forward to seeing photos shared on social media, and to seeing as many library and information professionals as possible in Brisbane in September.
